Confidentiality and uploads do not mix
Solicitors, barristers, accountants and other professionals owe their clients a duty of confidentiality, and for solicitors it is part of the SRA Code of Conduct. Add legal professional privilege, and it is clear why client matters need care. A dictation sent to a cloud service for processing discloses client information to a third party. That can be covered by contracts, but it still needs explaining.

Frequently asked questions
Can law firms use AI without breaching confidentiality?
The key question is whether client information is disclosed to a third party. With SpeechToWork it is not, because speech recognition and the language model run on your computer and transfer nothing. The professional assessment for your firm remains yours, but local processing makes it considerably simpler.
Does SpeechToWork work with our case management software?
SpeechToWork writes into any Windows program or browser field with a text box, so also into case management systems such as Clio or LEAP, without an interface. There is no link to a digital dictation system with a workflow to secretaries. The text is created directly, so the typing step disappears.
Can several fee earners share one dictionary?
That comes with the “Team” plan, which is in preparation: dictionary and snippets managed centrally for all workstations, such as courts, opposing solicitors and recurring wording. Until then, each workstation keeps its own dictionary. In every case, dictations are processed locally on the computer where they are spoken.
What happens to the recordings?
By default, the recording is discarded after recognition. Only the text is saved, in the history on your hard drive, and you can switch that off too. Recordings are only kept if you explicitly switch that on. Nothing is sent to us or to any other provider at any stage.
