Writes, not just transcribes
“By Wednesday, no, by Thursday” becomes “by Thursday”. SpeechToWork sets punctuation and numbers itself.
SpeechToWork is dictation software for Mac that works in every app: hold the right Command key, speak and let go. The finished text appears wherever your cursor is, in Mail, Outlook, Word, Safari or your industry software. Speech recognition and AI run locally on Macs with Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later.

SpeechToWork runs on any Mac with Apple silicon, so M1 or later, with macOS 14 or later. The minimum is 8 GB of memory and 10 GB of free disk space; 16 GB of memory is recommended. Macs with an Intel processor are not supported.
There is no plugin and no integration. SpeechToWork remembers the app that was active when you pressed the key and inserts the finished text there: Apple Mail, Outlook, Word, Pages, Teams, Slack, your browser or your industry software.
macOS comes with its own Dictation feature. You turn it on under System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation and start it with the Microphone key or a keyboard shortcut. According to Apple, general dictation is processed on the device once the speech models are downloaded. For a quick note or a short message, that works well.
In office work, three limits show up:
Setup, commands and privacy of the Apple feature, with all sources, are covered in our guide to Mac dictation.
Speech to text on a Mac with SpeechToWork means: speech recognition (Parakeet) and the language model (Gemma, run with llama.cpp) are files on your Mac and run there. Dictations, texts, recordings and receipts are not sent anywhere, neither to us nor to an AI provider.
SpeechToWork only goes online to download the models once and to check your licence. After that you can dictate on a train or without Wi-Fi. How this works technically is explained in our guide to local AI, the data protection side in the guide to GDPR-compliant AI.
The Mac version does everything the Windows dictation software does, at the same price:
Prices are the same on both systems, per user plus VAT: Dictate at 19 € a month, Assistant at 39 € a month. You can try it for 14 days without payment details.
macOS asks before any app may notice keys in other apps, use the microphone or see the screen. SpeechToWork walks you through the permissions on first start, opens the right page in System Settings and shows what has already been granted.
| Permission | What for | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Accessibility | So SpeechToWork notices the record key in every app and inserts the text there. | yes |
| Microphone | So your dictation can be recorded. The recording never leaves your Mac. | yes |
| Screen Recording | For the other participants' audio in meetings, for screenshots and “Ask the screen”. Takes effect the next time SpeechToWork starts. | for these features |
Accessibility and Microphone take effect immediately, no restart of your Mac needed. A picture of the screen is only taken when you trigger it yourself.
“By Wednesday, no, by Thursday” becomes “by Thursday”. SpeechToWork sets punctuation and numbers itself.
Hold the right Command key, speak, let go. The text lands where the cursor is, in any Mac app.
The Mac version is signed and notarised by Apple. Your content still never leaves your Mac.
Speech recognition and the language model are installed on your computer and run there. What you dictate ends up in your program and nowhere else. How the data flow works.
Audio and text stay on your computer. There is no server listening in and no AI provider in the background.
No third party processes your dictations. So there is no data processing agreement to sign and no international transfer to assess.
Once installed, SpeechToWork works offline. Only the licence check needs a connection.
Besides the Dictation feature built into macOS, there is standalone dictation software such as SpeechToWork. It runs on Macs with Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later, writes into any app and tidies up the wording as it goes. Speech recognition and the language model run locally, so your dictations are not sent to a cloud.
No. SpeechToWork needs a Mac with Apple silicon, so M1 or later, and macOS 14 or later. The reason is the local AI: the language model runs via Metal on the graphics part of the Apple chip. 16 GB of memory is recommended. On Windows, SpeechToWork runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11.
By default, the right Command key. You hold it down while you speak and let go when you have finished. The finished text appears wherever your cursor is. On Windows, the default record key is the right Ctrl key. Apart from that, SpeechToWork works the same way on both systems.
Yes. After the one-off download of the language models, 4 to 6 GB depending on your Mac, dictation, rewriting, summaries and minutes all work without internet. SpeechToWork only needs a connection to check your licence. No dictations, texts or recordings are sent in the process, only licence details.
No. SpeechToWork brings its own speech recognition and language model and does not use macOS Dictation. You can leave Dictation switched on as long as it uses a different key. For SpeechToWork you only need the Accessibility and Microphone permissions, plus Screen Recording for meetings and screenshots.
So that SpeechToWork notices your record key in every app and inserts the finished text at the cursor. Without this permission, the key does nothing outside SpeechToWork. You grant it once in System Settings under Privacy and Security, and SpeechToWork opens the right page for you on first start.
Yes. SpeechToWork records your microphone and the audio from Teams, Zoom or Meet, then writes a transcript and minutes with decisions and tasks, without a bot joining the meeting. For the other participants' audio, macOS needs the Screen Recording permission. Always get everyone's consent before you record.

SpeechToWork is new. Chrome, Edge and Windows SmartScreen only trust a file once it has been downloaded many times. For a new program they therefore show “Suspicious download” or “Windows protected your PC”. That is a judgement based on how well known the file is, not a malware finding.
The installer is digitally signed, publisher Danilo à Tellinghusen. To check, right-click the file, choose “Properties” and open the “Digital Signatures” tab. The Mac version is notarised by Apple.
